What does being “trauma-informed” mean?

Trauma-Informed* generally refers to an organization or practitioner that provides services in a manner that recognizes the impact trauma(s) may have on an individual. The goal of Trauma Informed Care (TIC) is to ensure that environments and services are as welcoming and engaging as possible for individuals who have experienced trauma. The basic tenets of TIC are that there should be a realization of the widespread nature of trauma, a recognition of signs and symptoms of trauma in individuals, and a response that integrates this knowledge into the environment, policies, procedures, etc - with additional attention on avoiding re-traumatization. (*Other terms used may be used interchangeably, such as: Trauma-aware, sensitive, & safe).
